You could use the ATI drivers under any distribution and any kernel
(2.4).
use the rpm2targz
decompress the archive and install it
go into the directory /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod
sh make.sh
cd ..
sh make_install.sh
it will compile the drivers for your kernel.

I have an Evo n800w (Compaq) with the ATI mobility Radeon 9000.
You have two possibility :
- Download the CVS version of DRI and install it.
- Use XFree 4.2.1 / 4.2.0 and use the last version of the ATI driver.
