I believe Sven Luther and Alan Cox and mentioned that they were
thinking about adding DRI support for 3D labs cards at some point. I
think Sven did some preliminary work that might be in a branch in the
DRI cvs tree. You might want to enquire more on the dri-devel mailing
list.

Fair point for people who want to get up and running and get on with
things.

My question was:
I've got a 3DLabs GVX1 AGP card. This works fine in 2D but I'm really
interested in 3D support, especially for this card. I'm only learning C

programming at the moment but I've been tossing around an idea for a
program
that can take advantage of 3D for quite a while. I've also more
recently
started playing with OpenGL programming as well.

Unfortunately, I don't have the skills to hack the pm3 and gamma
support for
this card, but I'm willing to play with any patches anyone might want
tested.
I'm in no hurry but would like to encourage work on this card.

On the other side, I've also got an ATI Rage128 AGP card. Here is where
my
current conflict arises. I've only one machine with an AGP slot, my
main
desktop. If no one is interested in working on this card, then I am
wondering
if the ATI Rage128 has enough 3D support to make it a much better
choice for
my desktop that using the GVX1 card in 2D? Personally, I'd rather spend
my
free time playing with patches and providing some feedback than copping
out
and using the ATI card.

I am hoping that when I grow up I can be an XFree86 developer too ;-)
(I'm
only 36 and a half years old)
Seriously, I would like to get more involved than just testing and
such, but
I currently don't have the skills. Someone once told me over a pint
(His
initials were ERS) That the best way to learn programming was to find a

project that you were interested in, and get involved in it. XFree86 is
a
very big project, but the gamma and pm3 drivers of XFree86 might be a
good
starting point.
