Few things here: 1) Use the "ati" driver instead of "vga"; 2) Specify the virtual resoltion you want (man XF86Config); 3) The "ati" driver will support this adapter at more than depth 8 (256 colours). Read README.ati. The "vesa" driver might, but I can't vouch for it.
