Yes, as this machine (the i810 one) didn't have problems previously. Nothing
about the glx module in this one, unlike the S3 crash. The problem could have
been around for some time, as it's rare that I leave an X session up for more
than a day (I usually exit back out to command line when I'm done), and that's
when this seems to happen: when X is left running over a day or so.

I'll see what happens without the suspected modules. Wine complains with glx
missing.

[XFree86] Xserver crash, i810

2006-10-29 Thread jayjwa
Here's the same type crash as was happening with the S3 VirgeDX chipset, only
this time on i810. No mention of glx module, but it was loaded. Two different
machines, same XFree86, 4.6.0. Both crashes only happen if X is left running
for over a day or so, then shut down. Once the server closes, the console is
never restored. This crash didn't produce a log, only the follow when I got
hold of the console back using svgalib's restoretextmode util.

Any idea what's cause both machines to crash, but only when X is up for quite
some time before shutting down? The S3 crash happened the same way, but
mentions GL/glx module.

This happened priviously on the i810 as well, but I had no output to send in
as I couldn't re-claim the console and had to reboot.

[XFree86] Xserver crash part #2: glx module

2006-10-25 Thread jayjwa
(If you missed it, I posted a few issues back about a strange crash, now I
have more info as to the cause and how to get out of it again.)

Yup, it is definately the glx module. Remove it and everything is OK. It won't
crash right away. I have to have X up for about 20 minutes and then close it
down before it gets stuck in graphic mode. This only happens on the S3 VirgeDx
machine, not my other i810.

I figured out you can use restoretextmode from svgalib. Just save a
known-good textmode: restoretextmode -w /etc/vga/textmode.save. Then put this
in a small script you can blind-type (because the screen will be useless after
the crash), such as /bin/tt:

#!/bin/sh
##
## Reset textmode after an Xserver crash.
##

restoretextmode -r /etc/vga/textmode.save

When if/when the crash happens, (under root) just hit tt and you're out.

If the problem would occur again. Since it happened with regularity that first

When this happened last night, I had X running for hours, probably about 10.
When I exitted is when the crash happened. After that I was able to reproduce
it by just starting X and then right away exiting out. There was never a
screen saver running (other than the default X11 one that will come on after a
bit), such as xscreensaver or xlock, and I exitted all apps before terminating
the window manager, which was at the time Blackbox. When I reproduced it last
night I used also Mwm, and Twm, both with users and root user.

I cut the DRI module and it still produced the same results. Now today, I
can't reproduce this at all (but I didn't let it run a long time, such as the
 10 hours yesterday).

Does omitting the glx module help? Perhaps the trace (which
implies a segfault in __MESA_destroyBuffer unless I'm reading that

[XFree86] XServer Crash

2006-10-16 Thread jayjwa
This just started this morning, but I don't use this machine as much so
prehaps this may be due to a kernel upgrade?

Exiting X results in the screen locking, black, with just the pointer where I
left it. The command line is still usable, but the only way to get the display
back is a full reboot. I caught the logfile this time, looks like X starts to
crash and then doesn't restore the text mode:

Re: [XFree86] XServer Crash

2006-10-16 Thread Mark Vojkovich
It looks like a problem related to OpenGL. My guess is this
happened when cleaning up resources for an OpenGL app (like the
screen saver) during shutdown. Does killing the screensaver while
the server is running produce the same problem?

To my knowledge the S3 driver doesn't support accelerated
3D graphics. Perhaps it doesn't happen if you don't load the
dri module?

Exiting X results in the screen locking, black, with just the pointer where I
left it. The command line is still usable, but the only way to get the display
back is a full reboot. I caught the logfile this time, looks like X starts to
crash and then doesn't restore the text mode:

When this happened last night, I had X running for hours, probably about 10.
When I exitted is when the crash happened. After that I was able to reproduce
it by just starting X and then right away exiting out. There was never a
screen saver running (other than the default X11 one that will come on after a
bit), such as xscreensaver or xlock, and I exitted all apps before terminating
the window manager, which was at the time Blackbox. When I reproduced it last
night I used also Mwm, and Twm, both with users and root user.

-To my knowledge the S3 driver doesn't support accelerated

I cut the DRI module and it still produced the same results. Now today, I
can't reproduce this at all (but I didn't let it run a long time, such as the
10 hours yesterday).

[XFree86] Xserver crash

2006-05-25 Thread jp kn
hi
I am using linux-2.6.11 (uclibc) kernel with ati
framebuffer driver (RAGE XL).
When i am using Xserver on my normaly it started and
works, but it get crashed when moving windows on it,
and we cannot predict when it crash. At the time of
crash always get the debug message

debug atyfb: Mach64 non-shadow register values:

   debug atyfb:Mach64 PLL register values:

and print some register values

on Xfree86 log message

Fatal server error caught signal 4
(sometimes signal 11 or 10)

..Is it a problem with ATI driver ?(I changed my
XFree86 version to check whether it is a problem of X
but again crashed thats why i suspect ATI driver).
my machine is a Xiaohu thinclient board ..and i could
see some
referance in xlinit.c ..

[XFree86] XServer Crash

2005-09-16 Thread Uday Bhaskar V.

Dear All,

I am using Red Hat Linux 9.0 with glib 3.3 and kernel
2.4.20-8 versions. The XServer crashed when I tried to read the contents of the
/dev/mem file and /proc/kmem file using the cat command inorder to retrieve the
contents of the physical memory.

As suggested in the kernel dump, here I am attaching the
XFree86.0.log file.

What is wrong with the /dev/mem and /proc/kmem files and how
they are related to XServer crash? Am I missing any configuration file
variable?

Please provide a pointer to the solution or any link to
study.

The same situation is repeating in every Linux box whenever
I am performing some operations on /dev/mem and /proc/kmem files.

Regards.

[XFree86] xserver crash

2003-12-04 Thread Suryaman Maharjan
hi !

i have xserver XFree86 Version 4.3.0 on RH9.0. it was working fine until i
happen to reboot the machine from terminal without exiting from the
xwindow. since then i am not being able to run xwindow. it prompts for
username and password as normal. but when both username and password is
supplied, the blue screen appears and doesnot progress beyond that.

i have tried XFree86 -configure which prompts to run XFree86 -xf86config
/root/XF86config.new but the problem remained the same.
the only message i could see in the terminal is
(++) Using Config file: /root/XF86Config.new

someone please advice me.
thanks in advance.

[XFree86] Xserver crash on unkown PCI

2003-11-30 Thread Faissal ABDALLAH

Hi there,
after installing FreeBSD 4.7 on a P4 machine i tried to configure my
GeForce FX 5200 by downloading its driver from the NVIDIA website (and did
as they've specified). After installation of the driver, the startx command
ended by a crash : the output said that a card was found but was not added
correctly to the xf86PciInfo.h as specified in the output of scanpci
attached to this mail with other information about the Xserver configuration
on my box. Please help me on sorting out this issue... Thanks in advance and
best regards

Faissal

Re: [XFree86] Xserver crash on unkown PCI

2003-11-30 Thread Mark Vojkovich
The GeForce FX 5200 wasn't supported until XFree86 4.3, so
xfree86 -configure isn't going to work with versions older than
that.

Mark.

I'm sure Mr. Myers didn't delete the font. :^) Just be sure xfs is running.

This has probably been brought up before, but since this is the #1 FAQ,
XFree86 should probably print an extra line in the error log:

Tip: xfs isn't running, but XFree86 needs it to access your fonts. Restart
xfs by running /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start

Or similar, if it sees that unix/:7100 is the only font path element and that
no process named xfs is running. Actually, something like this might better
be left up to distributors due to the WIDE variance in startup and service
scripts, but still, it's worth considering.

2003-06-24 Thread Cynthia Grossen
Your font server has failed.

Here is a link to Red Hat documentation about the font server XFS
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/ref-guide/s1-x-fonts.h
tml

Service xfs restart may work, you'll have to be running as root and X
should not be running. The latter shouldn't be a problem. :) I'm not a Red
Hat user so maybe someone else can help you if you have more questions.

Your second choice is to add the font directories to your config file. This
is the preferred solution.

Add the following lines to the Section Files in the XF86Config file:

   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled
   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled
   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled
   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo
