The tag rename functionality had bugs in the past (specifically something to
do with indexing afterwards). The feature was fixed recently and now it
should work without problems. Your problems, however, look like they may
have been caused earlier (before bugs were fixed) without you noticing it
For the record: This is scary.
I'd be hard-pressed to try renaming any tags given all the confusion there's been with this.
I just mention this to suggest that fixing this ought to be a fairly high priority.
