Many thanks to Alexander, Mick and Urs!
The strange C.UTF-8 , which was suggested by one of the devolopers of
media-gfx/darktable,
did cause the problems. The error messages were strange and misleading.

The point of slotted lua is to be able to have many at once. There's
packages that only support 5-1, and others only 5-3 (like darktable),
so pick 1 or many based on what you need/use.
lua5-1 still has the most compatibility so it makes sense as defau

if you find a way to produce a locale named "C.UTF-8" on
Gentoo. I would be interested in it, as it seems that newest darktable
from git needs this to compile correctly.
You can generate a "fake" C.UTF-8 locale with localedef:
# localedef -i en_US -f UTF-8 C.UTF-8

was much more idealistic than nowadays. For example I
said, that I never would buy a product from MS. But now a Windows PC
stands beside me, because I need it for RAW conversion and image editing.
Yes I know that there are RawTherapee, Darktable, Gimp etc. but I have
to live from my work and I often have
conversion and image editing.

a short time and I can't do this (yet) with OpenSource.
But of course there are still some principles to which I (hopefully
