I haven't used genkernel and here's my /boot:
ls -l /boot/

$ cat /boot/grub/grub.conf
$ ls -al /usr/src

Hi Ric,
yes, here is what you asked for :
ls -al /boot
total 12526
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 792 Feb 6 11:45 .
drwxr-xr-x 21 root root 576 Jan 20 16:37 ..
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 Feb 6
a greatly reduced /dev which
helps protect your physical devices.
For example, here is /dev from one of my containers:
# ls -l /dev/
total 0
crw--w 1 root tty 136, 3 Feb 4 08:57 console
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 Feb 4 08:57 core -> /proc/kcore
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Feb 4 08
that works, I don't know what to think really
but if it fails, maybe something is off on my /tmp directory or
something. Does this look normal:
root@fireball / # ls -al /
total 36
drwxr-xr-x 25 root root 616 Jul 19 11:22 .

I just run this as root (as a test while running my old system):
rsync -avHAX --progress /home/ /new/
After a few seconds I canceled this with ctrl-c and got this result:

CD or USB? You should be able to boot that medium again, then check to see
what driver it is using for the drive controller. I'm sure there's a more
direct way to do this, but here is how I can easily find the info:
cd /sys/block
ls -al

root tree will (has to) be read-only.
There is already a development system with everything working as expected
on the final system.
Adjusting a few files, when I try to simply put it to a squashfs, the
system boots with several errors, when trying to write to "/etc" and "/var&
