EVENT PREVIEW FROM FABIAN PASCAL:
The common position in the database industry is: "Normalizaton is
fine and dandy in theory, but we live in the real world and I cannot
get acceptable performance with fully normalized databases." But does
the concept of "denormalization for performance" make sense? What is
more, denormalization proponents completely ignore the integrity
implications. In fact, they are not even aware that denormalization
imposes an integrity control burden and even if they were, they can't
formulate the necessary constraints. Not only is the control burden
prohibitive (or even impossible in SQL), but if the necessary
constraints were applied, they would cancel out performance gains, if
any!
