About once a second modprobe tries to find module block-major-8. I
see in /var/log/messages:

Aug 4 17:45:00 clubfoot modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module \
block-major-8
Aug 4 17:45:31 clubfoot last messagerepeated 30 times
Aug 4 17:46:32 clubfoot last message repeated 60 times
Aug 4 17:47:33 clubfoot last message repeated 60 times
Aug 4 17:48:34 clubfoot last message repeated 59 times

As near as I can tell there is nothing in modules.conf that should be
causing this:

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias usb-controller usb-uhci
alias eth0 rtl8139
alias eth1 rtl8139
alias sound-slot-0 es1371
alias char-major-195 NVdriver

ide-scsi support for hdd options ide-cd ignore=hdd pre-install sg
modprobe ide-scsi # load ide-scsi before sg pre-install sr_mod
modprobe ide-scsi # load ide-scsi before sr_mod pre-install ide-scsi
modprobe ide-cd # load ide-cd before ide-scsi

Any ideas?

women failed to solve any of society's problems, the solution was to
burn more young women.
