Subject: 20th Ramzan 1431 A.H. - Conquest of Makkah

As Salam-o-alaikum,

20th Ramazan – Conquest of Makkah

Muslims had been scoring victory after victory with the help of
Allah(swt) after migrating to Madina. Only eight years had past after
the migration that Allah(swt) granted them final victory over the
pagans and Muslims returned to Makkah as conquerors – a place from
where only eight years back they had to migrate due to hard times
given by the pagans.

<<< Preparations for the expedition >>>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Prophet started his journey towards Makkah on 10th Ramazan in 8
A.H. (Tabqat ibn-e-Saad Page 135 and Al-badaya wan-nahaya page 258)
which was the 1st of January 633 A.D. Approximately 10,000 muslims
were following Prophet Muhammad(sawaw) on this expedition. Since this
expedition was during Ramazan, Prophet Muhammad(sawaw) ordered his
ashaab to break their fast (Aalamul Wara, Tehran, page 114)
<<< Entry into Makkah >>>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When the Muslim force reached close to Makkah, Hazrat Abbas(r.a.) –
uncle of Prophet Muhammad(sawaw), encountered Abu Sufyan who had
already got the news of the arrival of the Muslims. Hazrat Abbas(r.a.)
informed him that the Muslim forces are now very strong and the pagans
stand no chance against them and it is better that the throw down
their arms and let the Muslims enter Makkah as conquerors. Abu Sufyan
himself observed the validity of the statement and was convinced and
agreed to lay down arms and also to convince other pagan leaders to do
the same. Prophet Muhammad(sawaw) declared that whoever will take
refuge in the house of Abu Sufyan or the house of Hakam bin Hazam or
will enter Masjid-al-Haram (Kaaba) or will close their door and take
refuge inside will be in peace and no harm will be inflicted upon them
(Kamil al ibn-e-Kaseer – Page 24).

Prophet Muhammad(sawaw) awarded the standard of Islamic forces
initially to Saad bin ibadah(r.a.) but then asked Imam Ali ibn-e-Abi
Talib(a.s.) to take it over (ibn-e-Khaldoon on page 806 and Tarikh-e-
Tabari).

Prophet Muhammad(sawaw) himself accompanied a group of Ansaar – which
itself demonstrated the Khulq-e-Azeem of the Prophet(sawaw). In a
manner, it depicted the gratitude of Prophet(sawaw) to Ansaar who had
provided refuge upon his entry in Madina. He(sawaw) had a black turban
on his head and upon entering Makkah, he went straight to Kaaba
reciting verses of the Holy Quran. He held the door of Kaaba and said
“There is no God but Allah, He fulfilled His promise and helped his
Abd who alone defeated the combined forces of the pagans”.

<<< Declaration of Peace >>>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The exemplary victory was accompanied by declaration of peace. Not a
single drop of blood was spilt nor anyone wounded in this conquest.
He(sawaw) declared peace on all and said “No one has to fear anything
from us today. Today Allah(swt) has destroyed your evil intentions. Be
aware that Allah(swt) has created everyone out of clay and he will
send everyone back to clay. High status near to Allah(swt) is for
those who have taqwa. O people of Makkah, I declare peace on all of
you and no one will be held accountable for their past
deeds” (Muslamanan-e-Aalam page 88).
This general declaration of peace had such a resounding effect on
people that they started accepting Islam only because of the character
of the Prophet of Islam(sawaw).
<<< Cleansing of Kaaba – destruction of Idols >>>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A very important event of conquest of Makkah was the cleansing of
Kaaba. Kaaba was inhabited by 360 idols which had been there for a
long time. Prophet Mohammad(sawaw) declared the defeat of pagans and
of their idols and ordered Imam Ali(a.s.) to cleanse the house of
Allah(swt) of all the idols. Imam Ali(a.s.) took his Zulfiqar and
started smashing the idols. There were some left which were at a high
altitude so Imam Ali(a.s.) invited the Prophet Mohammad(sawaw) to rise
on his shoulders and break those himself. When Prophet Mohammad(sawaw)
stepped on the shoulders, Imam Ali(a.s.) could not bear the burden and
requested the Prophet(sawaw) that he can not take the burden of the
Prophet(sawaw) – in fact he was referring to the burden of the
Prophethood. Prophet Muhammad(sawaw) smiled and then raised Imam
Ali(a.s.) on his own shoulders and Imam Ali(a.s.) smashed down the
remaining idols (Abdul Haq Muhaddis Dehlvi).

It is interesting to note that Prophet Muhammad(sawaw) had the Muhr-e-
Nabuwwat and Ayaat-e-Qurani written on his shoulders. However, he
considered it appropriate for Imam Ali(a.s.) to step on them and rise
to destroy the idols. We know that putting anything on top of Quran is
an offence but putting Quran on top of Quran is no offence.

Ibn-e-Khaldoon also narrates that when Prophet(sawaw) came near to an
idol, he would recite the ayat – Jaa al haqqa wa zahqal batil innahu
kana zahooqa – and would point to the idol with a stick in his hand.
The idol would fall down and get smashed (Tarikh ibn-e-Khaldoon Page
808, Tarikh al-Wardi, page 120)

<<< Some traditions of battle >>>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are some traditions mentioned by some historians that although
overall there was no fighting for the conquest of Makkah, there were
two little battles fought when a couple of Muslims lost their way and
were ambushed and martyred by a group of mushrikeen ( Aalam-ul-Wara
page 119). The place from where Khalid bin Waleed entered Makkah, he
was resisted by a group of pagans which resulted in a battle in which
28 pagans were killed and 2 Muslim fighters were martyred (Tarikh ibn-
al-Wardi page 130).
