If it is pancreatitis, it can also be a result of a gall bladder stone lodging 
in the pancreatic duct.  This is painful in the extreme.  It is also 
life-threatening.  Glad to hear that he's in the hospital.  Any new news?

Sounds like pancreatitis.  What set that off could be many things - life style, 
diet, etc.  I would also guess he is dehydrated.
