Pat -- it is exactly that vaporizing that is dangerous. You know that you cannot trust him in this matter exactly because of that comment. What he should have said is that you will have an oxygen mask so that you're not breathing in the vaporized mercury, and a dam in your mouth so that the mercury-contaminated water can't be swallowed. You would be very wise to find a dentist that understands the dangers involved here, and who is prepared to protect you from them. I drove two hours each way to a dentist last year when I had my old failing silver fillings replaced. I found him on an internet search, because my regular dentist was about as concerned as yours.
Try going to www.dentalwellness4u.com and see if they have a list of holistic dentists. If not, a Google search should bring them up.
