fyi, here's the build-deps under debian:

Build-Depends: bc, bin86 [i386], bzip2, cramfsprogs | mkcramfs, debhelper (>> 2.0.0), 
flex, libpopt-dev, libtool, libreadline4-dev, modutils, rsync, texinfo, util-linux, 
uuid-dev
Build-Depends-Indep: bc, bzip2, debhelper (>> 2.0.0), docbook-to-man, docbook-utils, 
jadetex

and i know at least two are missing (bison & gettext).
