Summary: lilo can't see /dev/fd0 until it is mounted
Initial Comment:
This problem effects both boel and the old RH 7.3 install
I'm about to replace on our beowulf nodes. The problem is
this, if the lilo.conf file includes:
other=/dev/fd0
label=floppy
then when lilo is run after systemconfigurator (which
defaults to running GRUB) it generates an error:
fatal: open /dev/fd0: No such device or address
This isn't because systemconfigurator ran, editing that
out of the script and just running lilo does the same
thing.
In RH 7.3 the only way around this that I've yet found
is to put a floppy in the drive, and do:
mount /mnt/floppy
and then lilo is happy. Using modprobe to load all
the modules that are loaded at the above mount (but
not doing the actual mount) doesn't help.
I've also tried putting
nobiospnp
devfs=mount
in the "append" section for boel (and RH 7.3) and
lilo still wasn't happy.
This isn't super important because I can get the same
result
by messing with the boot order in the BIOS, but I would
like to understand it.
If it matters, this is a Tyan S2466 motherboard.
Thanks,
David Mathog
