ok folks, I have a solution and it doesn't require a code change - but maybe an entry in the FAQ?
I uses the SmartArray utility on my machine to delete and recreate the disks. Having done that I can now install either a rhel3 or rhel4 image onto the same system. apparantly something happens to some table somewhere on the disk that confused things. A suggestion I had gotten from a colleague suggested writing 32 blocks of zeros instead of 1 with dd because that's what is done in one of the utilities he's familiar with. I suppose to test this theory I coudl reinstall rhel3 from the distribtion, diddle around with Disk Druid to change the configuration and maybe recreate the problem and if so try writing 32 blocks of zeros, but I've run out of energy (and time). So to summarize where I am, I still need my grub-install and systemconfiguration patches to make rhel3 install correctly, but other than that things appear to be pretty solid for me. -mark Using Tomcat but need to do more?
