Why not using grub itself, instead of grub-install script? In SuSE, yast
(for example) does exactly that, it creates the file /etc/grub.conf with
the grub commands to install the bootloader, then runs grub --batch.

For example in my pc /etc/grub.conf is:

root (hd0,4)
install --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 /grub/stage1 (hd0,4) /grub/stage2
0x8000 (hd0,4)/grub/menu.lst
quit

where (hd0,4) = /dev/sda5... in this way we've only to translate linux
dev names using the grub syntax into systemconfigurator and it shouldn't
be too hard.

Just my 2 cents..
