I would like to build SI 3.5.3 on my Ubuntu systems. I need the feature
that I saw discussed where the prepareclient operation builds a working
initrd of the live system. This should help overcome the fact that I
cannot build a bootable CD that addresses the hardware set - Dell
Precision 380 (new SATA driver... grrr.).

Anyway, configure works, but the make ends up with the following error:

In file included from subst.c:11:
/usr/include/unistd.h:236: error: two or more data types in declaration
specifiers
make[3]: *** [subst.o] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory

make[2]: *** [util/subst] Error 2
make[2]: Leaving directory

make[1]: *** [subs] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory

make: ***

Error 2

The installed version of e2fsprogs on my system is: 1.38-2ubuntu1
Is there a version mismatch?

Thanks
