I've tried to image & reinstall a suse 10, and I've found no problem
about networking and in particular regarding the use of the standard
syntax (ifcfg-ethN).

Following are some info about my testing configuration (do you see some
big differences from your config?):

Regarding the ifindex it seems to be a unique identifier for each
network interface (often used for SNMP functionalities):

Maybe you've configured something to have this kind of features?
Moreover I've some problem reading the ifcfg* files you've attached in a
previous mail... can you send them again (better in the mail body if
it's not a problem...)
