So it seems to be a network problem with rsync... are you using a NFS
filesystem for the image repository (/var/lib/systemimager/images)? are
you using some security mechanisms (like SELinux) that could restrict
root privileges?

Otherwise I can only suggest to update rsync to a recent release...
