I went through the same process, and it had worked once in the past, but it did
not this time.
Everything seems to be good so far - image installation went without a hitch
(except for some barrier sync warnings - looking into that..)

I'm curious if you would be able to use reiserfs (or jfs or xfs) and make full
use of the partitions.
The main reason I'm going through this exercise (exorcise?) is to move from
reiserfs (3) to ext3. I am very relieved to have found this solution.
