dear si-gurus,

when upgrading to OS102 with kernel 2.6 (after fixing this rsync problem) i
stumbled in another problem related to the setup of network interfaces by
udev. this is not directly connected to SI but i googled and searched and
found no solution yet. i assume you guys know the problem and i hope you can
point me the info to read adn hopefully to understand/fix my problem.

my golden client sets interface names from a rule in
/etc/udev/rules.d/30-net_persistent_names.rules
using the MAC adress. i have to devices, one is 100 and the other 1000 Mbit. i
want to assign them in a fixed way (100:eth0, 1000: eth1). with the MAC from
the golden client the interfaces get renamed to eth2 and eth3 when i
autoinstall the other clients. so i removed the corresponding lines from the
above file. obviously some automatic mechnism then regenerates these rules
with the individual MAC. but unfortunately the assignement of eth0/1 is
different for the different clients.

you noticed it: i really dont understand this udev stuff properly :-))

i would like to make this assignement from the driver name. udes /etc/iftab
before. is this still possible with udev? is this distribution specific?
i simply assume that this is a well known and trivial problem ... and i am
just too much a rookie to see the solution.

thanks for your patience.

greetings

  rochus
