Your USB device is fine, which is why you can mount it manually. The
behaviour of GNOME's mounter seems to have changed in 7.10, so it
tries to add "usefree" as a mount option. All you need to do is go
into gconf-editor, navigate to
/system/storage/default_options/vfat/mount_options , and remove
"usefree" from the list. Then hopefully everything should be fine.
