olpc-utils-1.0.27 has just implemented this ( http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/6700). Beyond the advantages cited in the ticket, moving root's home to /home/root will save valuable overlay space when one has configured a persistent home directory. See http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/LiveOS_image.
