I see that, but this is a read-only application for most users. I 
could create a local copy in /tmp, but for most jobs, the number
of queries will be small-it's just certain cases where the number
of queries is really large (in this particular case, I was querying
more data than I realized). 

I think, in this case, it really is just response times due to network 
overhead (and general NFS sluggishness) which are causing
it to time out. If I could change that timeout value, I really think
it would solve the problem. Looking at the code, I can break one
really big query into pieces and very likely eliminate the problem, 
but I really hate to add complexity if there is an easier way to do it.
