Please note that there are two types of SOCI backends: those which are 
maintained and those which are not. Even those which are not supported 
are used and their current usage depends on the stability of backend 
interface.

Claiming that something requires only so little work in all backends is 
misplaced as we are already unable to find anybody to take care of some 
of the backends.
The solution would be to abandon those backends altogether and move 
forward with the evolution of the officially supported ones, but I guess 
that then more users would be hurt than served.

Excellent. I will therefore add a standard conversion in the similar way 
as that for boost::optional. This will have no impact on backends.
