If I understand well, plans are to support CMake as first choice of build
system, and to deprecate the Autotools for that purpose. I too prefer the
Autotools; however, there is a group enabling and supporting CMake building
for Boost (https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/wiki/CMake and
http://lists.boost.org/mailman/listinfo.cgi/boost-cmake) and it therefore
makes a lot of sense to go for CMake within SOCI.
Moreover, as CMake is now well supported by major Linux distributions, it
would be easier to package SOCI. For instance, I managed to replace BJam by
CMake (though, I'm absolutely not a CMake expert!) for the building of Boost
within the Fedora/RedHat packaging process (
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=529563).
Note that SOCI (version 3.0.0) has been packaged for Fedora/RedHat with the
Autotools (https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/packages/name/soci), not
yet with CMake. As I understand, there is still a long way to go. So, if
anyone would like to volunteer, do not hesitate!
In the meantime, I maintain an Autotools-built version, so that I can
maintain the RPM packaging process on Fedora/RedHat in case new versions of
SOCI are delivered. It builds cleanly, including for the Web site
documentation (HTML files).
