Hello,
this might not be 100% what you are asking for, but did you ever play with sIBL GUI?
http://www.hdrlabs.com/sibl/framework.html

If you will, it's a (free) management software for HDR libraries, with a convenient way to auto-create a light rig in your scene, by a button click. (A connection plugin for Soft needs to be installed for that to work, which will listen on some tcp port. For Softimage, mental ray, VRay, Arnold are supported for now)

It (among other things) creates a nurbs sphere, for visual feedback purposes, with an extra spot light (for better shadows) linked to it via Surface constraint on the more or less exact position of the sun (where was already defined in the sIBL package).

Also, it adds a background, reflection and lighting environment shader in some network, each with a rotation expression, something like
( sIBL_Feedback.kine.global.roty / 2 ) * PI / 180 + ( 67.5 * PI / 180 )
....sIBL_Feedback being the nurbs sphere.

Instead of going through the hassle and setting up everything by hand, you might want to look into this.
Hope this somewhat helps.
Best,
Eugen

Bump...

So nobody has a method ?

Very dumb question, I did it before, I'm sure...
How do I link a light (infinite - sun) rotation to a vector (Sun direction) in a Physicla sky property page ? (So that my light is a sun...)
I'm in redshift...
