*Movie Circuits*
Conversation with Marie Sophie Beckmann & Gabriel Menotti
Wednesday, 30 October 2019, 7.30 pm, diffrakt | centre for theoretical
periphery

Why are movies so messy to deal with from a curatorial perspective? And how
are they produced and take shape in and through (sub)cultural practices of
exhibition and distribution? Gabriel Menotti addresses these and other
questions in his most recent book 'Movie Circuits: Curatorial Approaches to
Cinema Technology' (Amsterdam University Press, 2019), where he attempts to
grasp media in the making. Starting from the book and many examples,
Gabriel will, in conversation with Marie Sophie Beckmann, delve into the
underbelly of cinema in order to explore how images circulate and
apparatuses crystallize across different material formations. The
indisciplinary experience of curators and projectionists provides a means
to suspend traditional film studies and engage with the medium as it
happens, as a continuing, self-differing mess. From contemporary art
exhibitions to pirate screenings, research and practice come together in a
call to reinvent the medium from within.
