Thanks guys. I was able to get the page loaded merely by dumping my root sphinx directory into the gh-pages github branch and it did work out of the box (after including the .nojekyll file). In fact, I found more of the web literature more unhelpful than helpful.
I will look into the links you sent so that I don't have to just copy-paste sphinx manually into my git directory each time. Thanks.
