Bobby,

Here are a couple things to consider in this situation.

  1. Have any modifications been made to the system over the years that were
done without following the pipe schedule method? This usually is what will
trigger a hydraulic review and is unfortunately pretty common in older
buildings that have had their usage changed over the years. In this situation
you could do a simple walkthrough of the majority of the building to confirm
the original pipe schedule, and then prepare smaller drawings of just the
remote areas of any modified areas. In this circumstance I would probably want
to install both new hydraulic placards as well as a sign stating that the
system is pipe scheduled.
  2. Has a backflow been retroactively installed on the riser? In this case
you may need to prove that the pipe schedule still works with the added
pressure loss of the backflow preventer. This wouldn't necessarily require
plans and calcs of the entire building, but would require a new flow test to be
the base-line of the pipe schedule flow/pressure assessment.
  3. If you have found the unicorn building that has had no modifications, and
doesn't have a backflow installed, then congratulations! In this case you do
not need a hydraulic placard and just need to install a sign the states that
the system was installed via the pipe schedule method.

Hope this helps!

Subject: [Sprinklerforum] Old Pipe Scheduled Systems

I am running into a lot of old systems that do not have hydraulic placard and
some of them are old pipe scheduled system. Has anyone ran into an old pipe
schedule system were the fire marshal is requesting hydraulic placards and if
so has anyone found a way to satisfy the requirements without surveying the
entire system and running new calculations?
