Without inheritance the query is completely different:
SELECT COUNT(*) FROM animal LEFT JOIN cage ON ((animal.cage_id) = (cage.id))
LEFT JOIN zoo ON ((cage.zoo_id) = (zoo.id))
WHERE ((zoo.name) = ('myzoo'))
Yes, that gives 5.
