The point of this, as I understand it, is to evolve the 2.x line in the same direction 3.x is going.
Not using 2.8 undermines the effort. It clouds this effort and doesn't make it clear to people that they have this alternative. I say using 2.8 sounds more than reasonable, for solid reasons.
