JATRAS REFFERING THE ARTICLE HAGUE TRIBUNAL OBSESSED WITH YUGOSLAVIA Dear Editor, http://english.pravda.ru/letters/2001/07/09/9679.html Your article stated that the International Tribunal at The Hague appears to have an obsession with the former Yugoslavia and in particular the Slavic Republics of Croatia, Serbia and the Srpska Republika in Bosnia. To be more specific, the "obsession" lies more with Chief Prosecutor Carla del Ponte and her pursuit of Slobodan Milosevic. In Chief Prosecutor Carla del Ponte, one is reminded of the character of French Chief Inspector Javert in Victor Hugo's book, Les Miserables, whose pursuit of Jean Valjean became nothing more than an obsession unto itself, rather than a real quest for justice. Slobodan Milosevic is the blue-ribbon prize; it is their lifeline, for without Milosevic, the International Tribunal would eventually cease to exist. Here is a court where the accused has not the right to face his or her accusers; whose judges come from such human rights abusers as Red China, Indonesia and Malaysia. U.S. Senator Jesse Helms, himself, calls the ICT a "kangaroo court," but is willing to send everyone else's war criminals to The Hague, but not America's. It is also a court where there is not one Orthodox Christian sitting in judgment of their fellow Orthodox Christians who are to be judged only by Muslims, atheists, agnostics and Roman Catholics. To compare, can you imagine the outrage in the United States if there had been no Blacks on the famous O.J. Simpson jury? Is there any doubt that there would have been riots in the streets of Washington and Los Angeles? We should therefore ask the question. "Justice for Milosevic? That all depends on whose justice."
