I've done exactly that in Sbuntu:
http://dev.laptop.org/~probono/sbuntu/

(You take a stock Ubuntu 8.10 USB stick, and simply add the file
sugar.squashfs to the directory casper/ on that stick - done.)

Unfortunately the Fedrora Live CD infrastucture doesn't support this yet:
