I'm not sure if your original MTU value was really wrong.
Can you send mails with attachements? (I.e. exceeding those
1400something bytes).
If you can, it's relatively unlikely that the MTU is wrong. At least, in
my experience.

Do you actually see packet-losses (doing a continous ping)?

On my Mac, I can't connect to a VNC-server at work without the
connection getting reset very often - at least with the original vncviewer.
I can't connect with any other VNC client - except for one commercial
one ("vine"), where I get no disconnections at all and it's superfast.
MSFTs RDP-client also works quite well.
(All using an August's pfSense snapshot on a WRAP).
