USA: November 29, 2001 WASHINGTON - U.S. ethanol producers set a monthly record high for production at 121,000 barrels a day during October, the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) said this week. The previous one-month record was set in February 2001 at 116,000 barrels daily, a level that was also reached in September, RFA said. Production in October was up nearly 10 percent from 111,000 barrels-a-day pace set in October 2000. RFA said that U.S. ethanol production is on track to set a one-year record of 1.8 billion gallons in 2001. The industry's capacity will also set an expansion record this year. There are 57 plants in operation, while 16 ethanol plants are under construction to add another 400 million gallons of annual capacity. Production of ethanol, a fuel-grade alcohol made mostly from corn, got a big boost this year as pollution rules forced a phase-out of MTBE, a competing fuel additive, in California by 2003.
