<x-charset ISO-8859-1>LOCAL ENERGY, a Santa Fe-based nonprofit dedicated to the research and development of sustainable local energy sources and systems, is looking for highly-motivated engineers and consultants interested in joining an "up-and-coming" organization at the ground level. LOCAL ENERGY has entered into an agreement with BIOS Bioenergiesysteme GmbH to design a high-efficiency, biomass-fueled heating system that can provide low-cost heat to downtown businesses and homes.
The contract with BIOS, an internationally acclaimed engineering company specializing in the research, development, and design of biomass-fired heating and energy plants, is the first step in the implementation of a $1.8 million study undertaken by Local Energy to assess the feasibility and economic impact of an environmentally friendly district energy heating system fueled by biomass in the form of forest waste. The study is funded primarily by a $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture in cooperation with the Department of Energy, and is expected to be completed within 18 months. Local Energy seeks to restore energy self-reliance to communities nationwide, and to inspire communities throughout the world to join in the effort to eliminate dependence on non-renewable energy sources. Specific goals of Local Energy include: • to promote and advance projects that relieve the economic distress caused by non-renewable energy costs on local municipalities, their locally owned businesses, and their citizens – especially their poor; • to reduce the negative environmental impacts of energy use; • to conduct nonpartisan research for the purpose of advancing the science of renewable energy and energy self-reliance for the benefit of local communities and the environment, and • to conduct discussion groups, forums, panels, lectures, and similar programs that instruct the public on the principles and practices of local self-reliance in energy.
