DAILY NEWS : GRAINS AND CROPPING Grain, canola and sugar-cane to fuel biofuel growth By Alan Dick Wednesday, 4 September 2002 A successful biofuel industry based on contracted growing of canola, grain and sugar cane would have the potential to re-invigorate rural and regional Australia. But problems such as access to retail outlets and resistance by the major fuel companies in Australia would have to be overcome. These were some of the messages from a session on biofuels at the recent Agriculture Australia 2002 conference in Sydney. (Biofuels include ethanol made from cereal grains and biodiesel made from canola). Executive director of the Australian Biofuels Association, Bob Gordon said before last year's federal election the Howard government had announced a biofuel initiative with a target production of 310 million additional litres of biofuel by 2010. That would lift total production to 350 million litres a year, taking in the 40 million litres of ethanol already produced by Dick Honan's Manildra Group for blending with fossil fuels. He said the government had commited $49.6 million to stimulate production and a support figure of about 16 cents per litre of new ethanol production had been discussed. He said the money could help support five or six new biofuel establishments in Australia. Production plants would have to be in rural areas and the industry had the potential to re-invigorate areas in decline. Steve Spence Subscribe to the Renewable Energy Newsletter & Discussion Boards.
