1. Where do you live? In most places you can download county regs and read them. *Do this.* 2. Go to the code enforcement office, or county clerk or whatever. Make friends. Be charming. Find out what the truth is. 3. Find out who would actually deal with this situation. Get to know him/her. If he/she is reasonable, talk it over and see what happens. 4. My neighbors call the county on me pretty much every week. But, I read ALL the regs, I've made a point of knowing who is in charge and being very polite and respectful, and I have the code and documentation right there. So far no problem.5. 5. I can't over-estimate the part about being polite and respectful. It makes the other person look like a crank.
