Just watch. Three years down the road Volkswagen will be marketing a diesel hybrid in the US. Biodiesel will be gaining considerable market share, and consumers will be buying lean and green. It's inevitable and Volkswagen is ready for it. They had a 70+ mpg non-hybrid prototyped in 1981. One or two more good gouges by fuel companies and producers, a little more finagle by OPEC, a bit more dallying by Detroit, and Germany's going to end up owning a large part of what Japan doesn't already.... :-) .....
