sorry to be a little picky but it is best to run an engine at peak torque
( rather than peak hp )which for most motor car Diesels is around 1800 to
2000 revs.

HP is confused by engine speed ( hp= 2.pi.N.T/ constant) where N is rpm and
T is torque. Best efficiency i.e. lowest specific fuel consumption is
usaully at peak torque rpm. It also coincides with longest engine life.

Peak torque rpm can be matched with pulleys and belts to the alternator
operating speed if there is a great discrepancy.
