IIRC the C64 Elite I got for Christmas in 1986 said the same, just like
all other versions. I also remember that already back then I didn't
understand what this "gold edition" business meant, as all versions
seemed to be the same. Have a look here,

and note that all 8-bit versions say "gold edition." 

Nonetheless you can go ahead and sell it and it should bring some good
profit. A complete Elite can sell for $30-$50.

The "Elite Plus" is a later version that featured VGA graphics.
