Hi

This is not strictly speaking related to Symfony, but has anyone ever tried to
translate conditional strings such as

“[0]No document found|[1]One document found|[1,+Inf]%count% documents found”

in right to left languages? I’m trying to translate that in Farsi or Arabic,
and mixing left-to-right and right-to-left strings is a real hell.

I can type correctly the following string in MS Word or in Outlook:

%count% متن دریافت شد|[1,+Inf] یک متن دریافت شد|[1]هیچ متنی دریافت نشد[0]

If it does not show well in your mail reader, it’s basically equivalent to:

[0]some rtl text|[1]some other rtl text|[1,+Inf]some other rtl text %count%

But whenever I try to copy and paste it to a text editor (Notepad, Eclipse,
PoEdit…), it messes up everything: pieces of LTR strings are splattered all
over the place. The files I’m trying to edit are encoded in UTF-8.

I’m also assuming here that PHP will read from left to right when it splits the
whole string in three, then replace inside the string whatever is between %%,
but I cannot even test it, as I’m unable to insert the correct string in my .po
file (and that would be the same with a xliff file, I’m sure).

If you faced the problem, I’d love to hear how you solved it.

Thanks,

Philibert
