Thank you everyone. I am indeed using OpenSSL 1.0.0c 2 Dec 2010. Ludo's explicit declaration of the SSL version solves the problem:
ht.sock.SSL.SSLType:= LT_SSLv3; Firefox tends to figure that out auto"magically". How can one add the same magic to own code?
