Yeah, I did wonder about it when you suggested it! I guess the only option is to either: a) Do nothing and live with compiled in defaults, or b) Parse and honour /etc/login.defs before falling back to compiled in defaults. As you've already NAK'ed b) I guess we just have to live with a). I'll probably carry a downstream patch for b) to be honest as I know a few users will be tripped up, but I can understand not wanting it downstream from a purist perspective.
