April 13, 2004 -- The United States Track Coaches Association announced that Brian Chaput of Pennsylvania and Lauryn Williams of Miami, Florida have been selected as the Athletes of the Week for NCAA Division I track & field.

Brian Chaput of Pennsylvania :

Pennsylvania senior Brian Chaput posted the top collegiate mark in the javelin at the Spec Towns Invitational hosted by The University of Georgia. The NCAA defending champion in the javelin improved on his collegiate leading mark with his throw of 254-09 (77.67m). This is the second USTCA Athlete of the Week award given to Chaput who was named on March 23 for his efforts in the javelin as well. The collegiate leading mark qualified Chaput again for the 2004 NCAA East Regional on May 28-29 hosted by The University of Florida. Pennsylvania will next compete at the Widener Invitational in Chester, Pennsylvania on April 17.

Lauryn Williams of Miami, Florida :

Miami junior Lauryn Williams won the 100 and 200 meter dashes posting the fastest time by an American this season in both events at the Miami Gatorade Track and Field Invitational in Coral Gables, Florida. Williams, who won gold medals in the 100 meters and 4x100 meter relay at the 2003 Pan Am Games, posted an American and collegiate best mark of 11.01 seconds to take the 100 meters. The Hurricane All-American then came back to an easy win in the 200 meters with a time of 22.46 seconds. Both marks qualified Williams for the 2004 NCAA East Regional on May 28-29 hosted by The University of Florida. Williams and the rest of her Miami teammates return to action when they compete at the historic Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from April 22-24.
