The Electronic Telegraph Friday 11 August 2000 World long jump champion Niurka Montalvo may miss the Sydney Olympics next month after the Cuban athletics federation insisted the naturalised Spaniard must not compete. Spanish Olympic committee president Alfredo Goyeneche said yesterday the Cuban athletics federation had announced its opposition to Cuban-born Montalvo competing at the Games. Montalvo won her world title in Seville last year in front of her adopted home supporters after marrying a Spaniard in early 1998, bringing about naturalization on May 5 last year.
