The optimist would say that since the sport of gymnastics
is subjective to begin with (everything is graded by
judges' scores), and historically there can be some scores
which have been WAY out of line (with reasons running the
gamut of Don King-like crookedness) the use of a further
subjective committee selection can help correct scoring
anomalies.  In fact, already this week Karolyi commented
that a the score a certain girl got in the vault was
a lot lower than it should have merited.  Sounded like
he was mentally gearing up to give her a boost in his
personal criteria.
But then she crashed and burned on the balance beam
anyway.
The pessimist would say that adding a subjective
committee on TOP of subjective judging, just adds to the
mess.
