World champion triple jumper German Charles Friedek has said he will attempt to compete in his event at the Olympics despite a partially torn ligament.

Although his knee still isn't completely healed, Friedek said he will fly into Sydney on Saturday and hopes hopes to be ready for the 23 Sept triple jump qualifications.

"The chances are still 50-50 that he will compete. It's not a simple injury," said Karlheinz Graff, a German track federation doctor.

Friedek injured his knee in training last week.

But he completed a series of test sprints this week without feeling pain, according to his coach.
