Ninth World Indoor Championships in Athletics
Friday, March 15

(Birmingham, GBR) -- US pole vaulter Stacy Dragila

failed to qualify for the final in the women's
pole
vault competition today, after missing three times
at
her opening height, putting an abrupt end to her
eagerly anticipated showdown with Russian vaulter
Svetlana Feofanova.

"What do you want to talk about?" the usually
affable
Dragila said as she rushed through the media
interview
area. "I no-heighted. I had a bad day."

Dragila, who reclaimed the world indoor record
with a
leap of 15-8 1/4 (4.78m) at the national indoor
championship in Boston earlier this month, was
never
close at her three attempts at 14-3 1/4 (4.35m).

Feofanova, the former indoor world record holder,
qualified with a successful clearance at the same
height.

This was not the first time that Dragila, the
reigning
world outdoor and Olympic champion, faltered at a
indoor championship. She won the world indoor
title in
1997, but followed up with disappointing eighth
and
fourth place showings at the 1999 and 2001 World
indoor championships.
